Doctor Seaweed is a Scottish supplement brand built around one ingredient: organic seaweed, wild-harvested in the Outer Hebrides. In this article, we will share why we recommend Doctor Seaweed products and how to use the code.

Why we recommend Doctor Seaweed

Seaweed supplements are an easy category to get wrong. Iodine content varies widely between species and harvests. Many products never state how much each capsule contains, and because seaweed absorbs minerals from the surrounding water, origin matters more than with most whole foods. Doctor Seaweed stands out because it answers the questions most brands leave open: which seaweed, from where, and how much iodine is in each dose.

One species, one source

Every Doctor Seaweed supplement and tea uses PureSea Ascophyllum nodosum, wild-harvested around the Outer Hebrides under exclusive rights from the Crown Estate. Doctor Seaweed runs its own manufacturing, and DNA authenticates every batch for traceability.

Short, transparent ingredient lists

Pure Organic Seaweed is seaweed powder in a vegan cellulose capsule and nothing else, and Collagen+ is simply marine collagen peptides and seaweed. Iodine is stated per serving: 350mcg per Pure Organic Seaweed capsule and 37.5mcg per serving of Collagen+.

Seaweed benefits: which Doctor Seaweed products to choose

Seaweed’s main nutritional value is iodine, a mineral the body needs to make thyroid hormones. It also contains fibres and plant compounds such as alginates, fucoidan, and polyphenols, which are being actively researched. Here is what the evidence points to across the ways Doctor Seaweed uses it.

Seaweed capsules and iodine

The NHS recommends that adults get 140mcg of iodine a day, mostly from dairy, eggs, and sea fish. That makes iodine worth considering for anyone who eats little of these, including people on plant-based diets. (NHS)

The research on this exact seaweed is encouraging. A 2014 University of Glasgow study gave women with low iodine intake Hebridean Ascophyllum nodosum at 356mcg of iodine a day, close to the dose in Pure Organic Seaweed. After two weeks, the group’s iodine status moved from insufficient to sufficient. (Combet et al., British Journal of Nutrition, 2014)

The same study is a reminder that iodine is active in the body. Thyroid-stimulating hormone rose across the group, and two participants moved outside the normal range. The NHS notes that 500mcg or less a day is unlikely to cause harm, but long-term high doses can change how the thyroid works. If you have a thyroid condition, speak to a qualified healthcare practitioner before starting.

Seaweed and skin

Iodine contributes to the maintenance of normal skin, which is one reason seaweed sits in so many skincare routines. Seaweed baths are a long-standing tradition on the coasts of Scotland and Ireland: soaking fresh or dried seaweed in warm water releases a silky gel, rich in alginates and minerals, that people use to soften and hydrate the skin.

Doctor Seaweed stocks the ishga Seaweed Bath, a muslin bag of wild hand-harvested Hebridean Fucus serratus with a pot of bath salts scented with lemongrass, lavender and juniper. Because seaweed carries iodine, the brand advises against it during pregnancy or if you have a thyroid condition. Alongside the bath, the skin angle continues from within through Collagen+ and the iodine in Doctor Seaweed’s capsules.

Seaweed in herbal tea

Adding seaweed to a herbal blend is a gentle way to include it in your day. Serene Blend+ pairs it with chamomile, peppermint, spearmint, fennel, and cassia, herbs traditionally used for winding down and after meals. It is caffeine free, so it suits the evening well.

Marine collagen

Collagen is the main structural protein in skin. A 2023 meta-analysis of 26 randomised controlled trials, involving 1,721 participants, found hydrolysed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. The authors noted bias in some of the included trials and called for larger studies, so the research points in a promising direction rather than a settled one. (Pu et al., Nutrients, 2023)

Collagen+ provides 5g of hydrolysed Type I marine collagen per serving, with iodine from seaweed alongside.
