If you live in a hard water area you already know something about what comes out of your tap, because you can see it on the inside of your kettle. Limescale is the visible part, and it is largely harmless. What it does not tell you is anything about the rest: the chlorine used to keep the supply safe on its way to you, the trace metals it can pick up from older pipework, or the compounds that regulations have only recently begun to account for. Water is the thing most of us take in more of than anything else, and the one we tend to check the least.
This is not a case for being frightened of your tap. UK drinking water is among the most tightly regulated in the world, and for most people it is perfectly fine to drink. Filtering is about going further than the regulations require, and about deciding for yourself what you would rather not be drinking. The difficulty is working out which filters actually do that, because the gap between what this category claims and what it can demonstrate is wider than in almost any other we write about.

Why we recommend AquaTru
We came across AquaTru reverse osmosis water filters while researching which type of filter was actually worth buying. Gravity-fed jugs are cheap and convenient but most are certified only for taste and odour. Distillers produce very pure water slowly and use a great deal of electricity. AquaTru reverse osmosis water filters offer some of the best filters, while not having to compromise on speed or tricky installs. Here are some more reasons we recommend AquaTru:
Lead, chlorine, fluoride, arsenic: it names what it removes. The four-stage system is certified to reduce all of those, plus nitrates, mercury, VOCs, pharmaceutical residues, and parasites such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Lots of brands say they remove “up to 99% of contaminants”. The number that matters is which ones, and AquaTru publishes the list.
Third-party tested. Product testing is carried out by IAPMO, an independent certification body, not in the company’s own laboratory. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a great deal of this category is self-assessed, and “tested” often just means the manufacturer tested it.
One of the most established names in home water filtration. AquaTru is made by Ideal Living, founded in 2007, and its countertop purifiers have been a benchmark in this category for years.
Certified against four recognised standards, and here is what they mean. NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste and odour. 53 covers health-related contaminants like lead and mercury. 58 is the reverse osmosis standard, and includes fluoride and arsenic. 401 covers newer compounds such as pharmaceutical residues. Many filters carry only the first of those, which is why a jug filter can be “certified” and still do very little.
They do not keep discontinuing their machines. This is quietly one of the best reasons to choose AquaTru. Replacement filters are still sold for every model in the range, individually as well as in packs, so a purifier bought today is one you can keep using rather than replace. Too much of this market works the other way: a new model each year and filters that quietly disappear.
The filtered water sits in glass, not plastic. On the Carafe, the pitcher your drinking water ends up in is glass. A small thing, but a considered one, and not something every competitor bothers with.

The full-size countertop unit, with a three-litre filtered tank and the highest throughput in the range. No plumbing and no installation. Best for larger households, or anyone who finds themselves refilling a smaller unit more often than they would like.

The two year pack contains everything the system needs across a full two-year cycle, including the reverse osmosis filter, which comes to about £130 a year. Buying the same filters individually across year one comes to around £155.
The hard water adjustment. If your water is above AquaTru's recommended 171mg/L, expect the pre-carbon filter to need changing roughly twice as often as rated. That is two extra filters a year at £35 each, taking a realistic annual cost closer to £200. It is the single figure we would most want to know before buying, and it is not on any product page. Before you buy: who should think twice
Your water hardness. AquaTru’s manual recommends the unit for water up to 171mg/L calcium carbonate, and advises monthly descaling above that. Much of southern and eastern England draws its supply from chalk and limestone and comfortably exceeds that figure. Your water supplier publishes hardness by postcode, and it takes two minutes to check before you order. An AquaTru will still work above that limit, as ours does, but it will cost more to run and need more attention.
