Keeping your fruits, vegetables and salad clean isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a matter of health. Whether organic or conventional, fresh produce can carry surface pesticides, bacteria, and dirt. Over the last few months I have been testing Greenscents fruit and veg wash—a 98% organic, cruelty free, natural solution designed to remove unwanted residues.

Why should you wash your fruit and veg?

While fruit, vegetables and salad provide us with important nutrients that keep us healthy, they are often coated in things that can negatively affect our health. Produce whether it is shop brought, homegrown, organic or conventional can be coated in:

  • Dirt and debris

  • Pesticide residue

  • Potentially harmful bacteria

  • Waxes and preservatives

Running your produce under running water will remove some of these. However, for the proper removal of things like pesticides and waxes, you will need to use bicarbonate of soda, diluted vinegar, essential oils, or a specialised product, such as Greenscents fruit and vegetable wash.

What makes Greenscents fruit and veg wash special?

There are not very many fruit and vegetable washes on the market—especially ones that contain only natural ingredients. While you can use diluted vinegar or bicarbonate of soda, they do not pack as much of a punch as Greenscents fruit and veg wash.

As a Nutritional Therapist, I know how important it is to thoroughly wash fruit, vegetables, and salad—and yet I continued to give my produce a quick rinse under the tap. I hoped that by purchasing a fancy fruit and vegetable cleaning product, I would be inspired to use it. While it took me a few weeks to get into the habit of routinely reaching for the Greenscents fruit and veg wash, I am pleased to say ‘yes, it has encouraged me to wash my produce’.

Below are several other reasons I opted for the Greenscents fruit and veg wash:

Ingredients & scents

The Greenscents fruit and veg wash is made from 98% organic ingredients.

  • Aloe vera: Aloe has natural antimicrobial properties and helps soothe surfaces. It can help loosen dirt and residues gently without damaging delicate produce.

  • Decyl glucoside: Helps break the surface tension of water, allowing it to more effectively remove dirt, oils, and residues from produce surfaces.

  • Soap nut shells: Also known as sapindus mukorossi. These natural surfactants create mild foaming and help lift off grease, dirt, and some microbes without leaving chemical residues.

  • Cider vinegar: Also known as acetic acid. Vinegar helps kill certain bacteria and pathogens. It also breaks down pesticide residues and can dissolve mineral deposits and waxes.

  • Xanthan gum: Provides a gel-like consistency to the wash so it can cling to the surface of fruits and vegetables for longer contact time, improving cleaning effectiveness.

  • Glycerine: Softens residues and can help lift away dirt. It also keeps the formula stable and non-drying.

  • Shikakai shells: Also known as acacia concinna. Its mild cleansing action helps in removing grime and residues from produce.

  • Benzyl alcohol & dehydroacetic acid: These prevent microbial growth in the wash itself, ensuring the formula remains safe and effective.

Greenscents fruit and veg wash review

Yes, the Greenscents fruit and veg wash may cost more than diluted vinegar or bicarbonate of soda, but this product contains more residue, removing ingredients and actively encourages me to wash my fruit, vegetables and salad.

Spraying vs dipping

When the pretty glass spray bottle arrived through my door, I was both excited and a little sceptical. Quickly spraying my fruit, vegetables, and salad felt super simple, but I worried in practice that dipping my produce in a large bowl of diluted vinegar would be more practical. In most cases, I find spraying my handful of salad leaves, strawberries or baked potato far easier than running a bowl of water. The easiest way to wash my produce is to put it into a large bowl or colander and spray it, while tipping or shaking the bowl/colander, so that it covers the full surface area. I can then quickly rinse the sprayed produce off under the tap after leaving it to work for a few seconds. While you could hold a potato or apple in your hand and spray at it, I don’t want to get too much of the spray on my hand—it may be natural, but it is very concentrated.

Scent and taste

The Greenscents fruit and veg wash does not have an overpowering smell and is actually very pleasant when sprayed onto your produce. I tested the citrus version, and it smells of lemon.

I was a little worried that my fruit, veg and salad would all end up with a faint taste of the fruit and veg wash. However, no matter what I have sprayed the Greenscents fruit and veg wash onto, it has left no taste.

Cleaning

I cannot always get hold of organic berries and even when I do, I still want to give them a good wash. Knowing that I am using a concentrated fruit and veg spray makes me feel much better. While I could not test it in a lab for changes in pesticide residue, I feel I am at least washing off as much as I can.

Final thoughts

With natural organic ingredients, cruelty-free status and refillable glass packaging, Greenscents Fruit & Veg Wash is as kind to the earth as it is to your health. If you’re preparing a summer fruit or cooking a winter crumble, you can eat with confidence, knowing your produce is truly clean. And if, like me, you put off washing your produce, then this is a great product to have close to your kitchen sink.
